market drayton

Market Drayton is a market town in north Shropshire. It is situated on the River Tern, between Shrewsbury & Stoke on Trent, and has formerly been known as Drayton, or Drayton in Hales.

The town's marketplace, which is still active today,  has a market charter granted from 1246.

The great fire of Drayton destroyed almost 70% of the town in the 17th century. It was started at a baker's, and quickly spread through the timber buildings. The Buttercross in the centre of the town still has a bell at the top for people to ring if there was ever another fire.

Market Drayton is famous for its gingerbread. The first recorded mention dates back to 1793, but it is believed to have been made earlier.
